Sulphate Reducing Bacteria
The sulphate reducing bacteria are a very large group of anaerobic organisms. The important role they play in our environment is only recently starting to be fully understood.
The sulphate reducing bacteria reduce sulphate to sulphide. They typically grow at temperatures between 25 and 35 degrees centigrade however some can proliferate at temperatures of >60 degrees. They are known to corrode cast iron, steel and various copper alloys. Localised corrosion with black sulphide present can indicate their involvement in the corrosion process but their presence alone does not mean thay are causing corrosion.
